THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE

  • The Slum population in Lagos was estimated at 1.3M.

The Communities we serve have been identified as part of the major Slum Capitals of the world and include:

    • Makoko
    • Zion
    • Orile Iganmu
    • Olaleye

A Sneak Preview into One of Lagos Slum Cities – Zion Community, Iganmu.

Zion is located on the southern part of Iganmu, Lagos.

Traditionally, it was said to have been discovered by fishermen who settled on the banks of the river (now sand filled) more than a century ago.

With an estimated population of 20,000 adults (going by Nigeria’s population of 75 percent children, that will amount to 80,000 inhabitants), the area is densely populated and partly built on a refuse dump.

Social Life is almost zero as there is no any form of recreation center in the community except for the youths that engage in street carnival during the Christmas holiday.

The predominant occupations are Fish selling, bricklaying, carpenter, plumber and security guard.

The population is predominantly Christians and Muslims

Security: only neighborhood watch (vigilante) group is visible in the community

Education: there is no public school (primary nor secondary) in the community

Water: water hawkers are the only source of water available to the community as there is no public pipe borne water in the area.

Sanitation: the near zero level of sanitation coupled with no access to drinkable water is a major concern in terms of water borne diseases, malaria etc. there is therefore big concern for public health to avert an epidemic in future. There is no form of public waste disposal system in the community.

Project 5 Loaves 2 Fishes started a healthcare intervention in 2011. We have been able to provide free treatment to about 1,500 people directly in the community (not counting those that come for our weekly clinic at another location). We also provide about 200 free Insecticide Treated Mosquito Nets, Free no perishable food and clothing and to the communities.

Our President’s Message

I have had strong believe that we must be our brothers keepers. Children, women and others who have been afflicted by circumstantial situations. Because of these a vicious cycle have enveloped them: poverty leading to ill health and ill health further aggravating poverty.

The WHO defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Therefore, Total Health is the the capacity of individuals, families, and communities to work together to transform the conditions that promote, in a sustainable way, their physical, emotional, economic, social, environmental and spiritual well being.

At Project 5 Loaves 2 Fishes we seek to promote the Total Health of the communities we serve through active participation of Community Leaders, considering them our primary partners in improving the health of all the individuals and families within their communities.

According to the World Health Organizations, Nigeria health indices are very poor and among the worst in the world!

We must help the helpless among us!!!

For nearly four years, Project 5 Loaves 2 Fishes have been changing lives and lifestyles of people living in poor communities. We desire to alleviate human suffering mostly attributable to ill health and poverty.

In Nigeria, Infant mortality and maternal mortality is one of the highest in the world. Hundreds of children, women and people have no access to medical services. Thousands of Children are dying daily from malaria and other preventable/curative causes.

A trip around these communities overwhelms you with sights of poverty, disease, malnutrition and hopelessness. These children and households desperately need medical care, so don’t let diseases and malnutrition take another child’s life. To make this worse, health infrastructure is poor.

Your gifts make so many wonderful things possible: With your help and support, Project 5 Loaves 2 Fishes will be providing free monthly medical interventions in identified poor communities. We will also be giving out Clothing and Foodstuff like Rice to alleviate poverty and ill health.

Towards successful implementation of our resolve to reach more communities, we started raising funds towards the acquisition of a N15M Mobile Clinic. This will enable us provide good quality medical services. Join us in making this dream come through.

We need medical and non-medical volunteers, medicines, bags of Rice and other foodstuff, clothing and funds.

It is your willingness to help that will bring lifesaving hope and assistance at a time when needed most. Your contribution also goes a long way in helping the UN Millennium Campaign achieve goal of ending poverty by 2015.
